What Are Macros? A Simple Guide to Protein, Carbs, and Fat

Macros, short for macronutrients, are the three nutrients your body needs in larger amounts: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Calories measure energy, while macros explain where that energy comes from.

Protein builds and protects

Protein supports muscle repair, keeps you satisfied, and helps preserve lean mass while losing weight. Include a protein source in every meal and let the rest of the plate follow.

Carbs fuel your day

Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred quick energy source. Fruit, grains, beans, and potatoes can all fit into a balanced plan, especially around workouts and active parts of your day.

Fat supports balance

Dietary fat helps with hormones, cell health, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Focus on foods like avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish.

You do not need a perfect ratio to eat well. Start with mostly whole foods, build meals around protein, and use BiteBud to spot patterns in your calories and macros over time.

Use macros as a decision tool

Instead of trying to hit every number perfectly, use your log to answer one question at a time: Did this meal include enough protein? Did I get a carbohydrate source that supports my activity? Did the added fats make the meal more satisfying? Small answers are easier to act on than an all-or-nothing score.
